Biochar Cameroon
The farmers from the RUDEC cooperative are trained to turn maize waste into biochar. With this new practice, 1.000 farmers in the Littoral region generate extra income, increase soil quality and remove carbondioxide from the atmosphere.
- Empowering women
- Increasing local income
- Improving soil quality
- Carbon stored for centuries
- CSI certified
Project starts in December 2024
The Rural Development Centre's in Cameroon reached out to Sinkit early 2024. Would biochar be of interest for them? During 2024 we had many online meetings and information exchange. We are proud to announce the sustainable agriculture and carbon removal project for smallholder farmers in the South West Region of Cameroon.
Project Overview
This innovative project focuses on utilizing maize production waste to produce biochar, replacing the traditional practice of burning agricultural waste, which contributes to poor air quality. By employing a controlled pyrolysis process using soil pits, the project not only reduces smoke but also creates a valuable soil amendment that enhances soil quality and sequesters carbon.
Timeline and Implementation
- Early 2024: Initial collaboration begins.
- December 2024: Training for the first 100 farmers and supervisors.
- Early 2025: Expansion of training to include more farmers.
Environmental and Agricultural Benefits
The introduction of biochar improves soil fertility and contributes to climate change mitigation by acting as a long-term carbon sink. Additionally, the project promotes sustainable waste management practices.
Certification and Monitoring
The project will be CSI certified, ensuring it meets standards for carbon removal initiatives. The PlantVillage platform will be used for digital Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (dMRV), enhancing transparency and data accuracy. This pioneering project not only serves as a model for future initiatives in Cameroon but also addresses multiple sustainable development goals, fostering collaboration between public and private sectors while benefiting local communities. Its success could lead to broader applications across other agricultural residues in the region.
